Under $40 L-track upgrade for our Sprinter's rear door

More mounting points for storage and gear hanging on the inside of our VS30's rear door, for under $40 with the end caps included.

Under $40 L-track upgrade for our Sprinter's rear door

Quick take

The space above the rear window on a VS30 door was doing nothing. A Yaocom 1ft L-track 4-pack (about $37 on Amazon when we bought it) gave us mounting points for storage and gear hanging, and the end caps come in the box. It took tape, a center punch, a drill, a deburring tool, and nuts and bolts.

Good for

  • Sprinter owners, especially VS30, who want more mounting points without a big build
  • Families who need somewhere to hang gear and get stuff off the floor
  • Beginners comfortable drilling a few holes

Skip it if

  • Anyone who doesn't want to drill into the door. This is a through-bolt job.

Why we did it

Every van needs more mounting points. On the inside of our VS30 Sprinter's rear door, the area above the window was wasted space. We wanted somewhere solid to hang gear and store stuff, so we added L-track there.

Step 1: Tape it up first

Painter's tape holds the track in place so you can check it's level and centered before you commit to a single hole.

Step 2: Center punch

Punch every hole location so the drill bit doesn't walk across the metal.

Step 3: Small pilot holes

Start with small pilot holes first. They're easier to keep straight and right on your marks.

Step 4: Deburr every hole

Clean up every hole so there are no sharp edges left on the metal.

Step 5: Nuts and bolts through the door

We bolted the track on with nuts and bolts through the door, then capped the ends.

The result

Bolted on and ready to hang gear. The kids' gear organizer now hangs right off two O-ring fittings, so shoes, water bottles and toys are off the floor.

What we used

Yaocom 1ft L-track 4-pack with 4 single-stud O-ring fittings. It was about $37 on Amazon when we bought it. The end caps are included, which is huge: others charge up to $10 extra just for end caps.
